Performance Management is a complex and systematic process, which includes the entire gamut of activities like employee performance improvement, performance development and training, 360-degree feedback as well as regular performance feedback. The objective of performance management is to enhance overall organizational effectiveness and productivity thereby achieving the goals of the company. It also allows for on-going and improved two-way communication between employees and their supervisors regarding their performance on the job.
An effective performance management program will enable an employee to have clear and consistent goals which are measurable at any point in time, point out where training is required, enhance career growth and also help the management to make decisions regarding reward and recognition for their employees. The end result of this program, if implemented successfully should be excellence in performance from all employees of the company.
A supervisor’s role in this program should be to provide guidance, coaching, and feedback to the team members throughout the year on job duties and responsibilities, performance goals and expectations, evaluate the performance and discuss future growth opportunities.
While implementing a performance management program, it is good to follow the steps below to ensure a systematic approach:
Plan the work and set the expectations- Get the employees involved in this process so that they understand the goals and know what needs to get done and within what timeframe. Managers should ensure that the goals set for employees are measurable, flexible and achievable within the given time.
Monitor performance on a regular basis- Managers should regularly provide feedback to the employees so that they can work towards achieving the goals set for them. It will also help them to identify and analyze their deficiencies and work on improving those as well.
Develop the employee’s ability to perform- This should be done by providing the right kind of training resources and other opportunities like specific assignments or higher responsibilities in order to help them develop their skills and increase productivity.
Rate performance periodically- To identify the top performers, the company needs to summarize the performance of employees and compare and rate them against the parameters set for them individually from time to time.
Reward and Recognize good performance- a reward should be given to recognize and acknowledge the contributions that an employee has made by his outstanding performance. This motivates them and increases their morale.
Managing each of these key components together will lead to effective performance management!
